May 22, 2011 - I reciently picked up a Mossberg 500 ASG, Shotgun. I got a responce from The Mossberg website, The serial number starts with J and that. I highly doubt it, given the sheer number of Mossberg shotguns that are produced. If you really wanted to know, you could contact Mossberg and find out if they offer a service that will date your particular shotgun. I know companies such as Colt and Smith & Wesson do this.

Platoon Commander Location: western North Carolina | I recently bought a Stevens Model 311 Series H, 12 ga double. It's a pretty plain-Jane shotgun with minimal checkering on the fore end and grip a plain barrel rib and one bead sight, but is very clean and I only gave $250 for it. Chambered for 2-3/4 and 3' shells, modified and full chokes (I think), twin triggers and 28' barrels. Stevens discontinued the model in mid to late '80s, and they didn't have serial numbers before 1968, but I'd like to figure out when mine was manufactured. The SN# is C387493. Anybody know of a reference source that would show manufacture dates? I once had a Fox Model B, a similar shotgun to the 311, but a little fancier, and it was modified and full choke, which is why I think this one is also. I'm going to take it to a local shop and have them gauge the barrels to see for sure. I've wanted another side-by-side ever since I sold the Fox B, I still regret selling it. I also wanted a shotgun I could shoot skeet and trap with, my Mossberg 500 only has an 18' barrel; it would have cost me almost as much to buy a longer barrel for the Mossberg as I paid for the Stevens. |

Accu-Choke - Made in U.S.A.'. The left side of the raised rib is marked 'Simmons Gun Specialties , Inc. Olathe, Kansas'. The bottom of the receiver is marked 'Mossberg / Made In U.S.A. / North Haven Conn. / 500A 12 GA'. The serial number is found on the left side of the receiver. Barrel Length: 28' Choke: This gun uses replaceable chokes (Accu-Choke is a Registered Name From Mossberg). The current choke measures .714' Sights / Optics: The gun is mounted with a full length raised rib. The rib is from Simmons. There is an ivory colored bead at the muzzle, and a small brass bead about mid rib. Stock Configuration & Condition: The stocks are wood. The wood has several surface scratches and dings, mostly on the forend. There is a flattened section on the wood at the top of the buttpad, this probably ocurred during buttpad installation . The LOP measures approx. 14' from the trigger to the back of the rubber buttpad. The buttpad is marked 'Supreme'. The drop at comb measures approx. 1 3/4', and the drop at heel measures approx. 2 1/8'. The top of the rib is approx. .75' from the top of the barrel plane. The stocks rate in about good overall condition. Type of Finish: Blue Finish Originality: All Original Bore Condition: The bore is bright. There is minor fouling that could be cleaned. There is no apparent erosion. Overall Condition: This gun retains about 85% of its metal finish. The balance of the finish shows some minor surface scratches on the barrel and receiver. There is some surface rust at the end of the magazine tube. This should clean up easily. The markings are clear. Overall, this gun rates in about very good condition. Mechanics: The action functions correctly. We did not fire this gun. Box, Paperwork & Accessories: One choke is installed in the gun. Our Assessment: Here is a 'trap' ready pump action shotgun that will accommodate 3' magnum shells. With its raised rib and replaceable chokes, this gun should prove highly versatile. This gun should appeal to the new shooter as well as provide 'backup' for a current competitor. We have seldom come across a Mossberg 500 prepared like this. Don't let this one get away.
